Library Storage Solutions

Today's libraries are about more than books.

The idea of a library simply as rows of books and places for silent study are quickly evaporating—these institutions are now bustling community centers, and responsible for educating and inspiring a variety of ages and cultures. For this reason, many libraries are supplementing their footprints with computer labs, classrooms, cafes, and makerspaces.
Of course, libraries will always be a place for books—and how you store those books becomes a key element of being part of this cultural shift. Regardless of if your library is public, academic, or otherwise—we can help you adjust and compact your book collections using high-density mobile shelving and other storage systems.

That way, you can make room for the other stuff—creating a dynamic learning space for your community. Read on to learn more about our library storage options.

High-Density Mobile Storage

If you’ve wrestled with the challenge of trying to cull a large book collection to make room for additional spaces within your library, we’re here to tell you that there’s another option. Mobile storage systems allow you to store double the amount of books and other printed materials in the same amount of book storage—or half in the same amount of space. In placing existing shelving into a mobile carriage, book collections are compressed into a space with one aisle, reducing wasted space. Simply pressing a button on the carriage or turning a three-spoke mechanical assist handle creates access to other aisles—allowing library patrons to retrieve what they need when they need it.

Cantilever Book Storage

Cantilever shelving’s appealing and modern look, united with its durability, makes for a great compact book storage solution. For academic, corporate, public and legal library purposes, cantilever shelving offers a comprehensive range of options and accessories to address the needs of your library today and plan for the future. The system accommodates an array of media formats, books, articles, newspapers, and much more.

Off-Site Library Shelving & Archival Storage

As many libraries are moving toward digitizing collections, there’s still a need for printed volumes to be accessible to researchers and students—especially for academic and research libraries that need to stay competitive.

The solution? An off-site book depository. As the student and faculty population grows, it is imperative that everyone has access to all the materials they need. By installing a mobile off-site archival storage system, libraries can create space for their current archival items while planning for the future. The University of Toronto did just that, maximizing all available space and serving 68,000 undergraduates and 13,000 faculty members. All in a system that is conducive to the best practices of the United States Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

Makerspaces

Makerspaces, collaborative hubs, innovation centers — whatever you choose to call them, they are changing the landscape of colleges and universities. Popping up in libraries, student centers, and sometimes standalone facilities — these spaces are providing students with access to technology and materials that they typically wouldn’t be able to access.

There are many considerations when it comes to designing a makerspace, but don’t let storage be an afterthought. Tools, supplies, and projects need to be securely stored to keep the innovation hub running smoothly.

Custom Modular Casework

Mobility & Flexibility: Makerspaces are made to be flexible, so don’t box yourself in. Our modular casework is made to keep up with your changing needs.

Lockable Storage: Makerspaces typically include expensive equipment or perhaps students need to store their projects. With lockable storage, you won’t need to worry about the safety of these materials after each use.

Power & Plumbing: Whether it’s a lab or a tech center, having power outlets or integrated sinks can make the world of a difference. Ensure students have the solutions to support truly hands-on experiences. Writable Surfaces: Collaborate with other makers and incorporate a writable surface right on the countertop or even a modular wall. Equip your space with all the tools necessary for student success.

Smart Lockers for Pick-Up

Here’s How it Works:

A student checks out the item they want to borrow through the library’s online portal. The librarian locates the item and creates a “package” for the student and deposits the item in the locker.

The student receives a notification via email or text that their item is ready to be picked up. The student heads to the locker and presents their credentials — student ID, smartphone or watch — and the locker automatically pops open. Once the student gets their item and closes the locker door, the transaction is complete.
No more waiting in line to pick up library materials — it’s time to streamline your exchange of goods across campus with smart lockers. Smart lockers in libraries are growing in popularity across universities. They provide a user-friendly and reliable space for everyone on campus to use at their convenience. Based on their schedule, students can pick-up their items using their smartphone or student ID credentials. For administration, it saves time and money while providing a secure way to loan out materials across campus.

Smart Lockers for Temporary Personal Storage

  • Integrate the lockers into your university ID or mobile credentials
  • Offer the lockers as a free amenity or change on-the-fly to charge a fee when hosting a special event
  • Lockers can be automatically disabled after each use for cleaning
  • The same locker bank can be both day-use and exchange of goods lockers
The library is one of the most popular spots on campus. Whether it be for studying, group sessions, or utilizing the computer lab — the library is a second home to many students. By providing a secure place to temporarily store personal items, students can confidently leave study materials or laptops when heading out to grab a bite to eat or even just a bathroom break.
